>[!tip] Easy Now!
> *First off*, enjoy this video. Everyday cary (EDC) is a wide ranging term and a rabbit hole of what-ifs and just-in-cases. There's no correct EDC kit but I think it's an interesting engineering and [[Personal Infrastructure|personal infrastructure]] challenge to work with the *things* we cary around. None of this is to be taken too seriously.

> I have no idea how many "versions" of this scheme I've had but I'm calling this `'25` because that's easier.
## Objectives For My Current EDC
I've often had the EDC pendulum pretty evenly in the middle; I have a sling bag that I take with me to work and back every day and I always work from the same laptop so I'm always bringing something back and forth. I travel a non-zero amount and it's usually for work, where I need to have a full complement of tools and my work equipment.
With the purchase of a Yurt in the mountains earlier this year, my wife and I have been going up almost every weekend. I find myself taking my [[Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag|messenger bag]], a backpack of "misc outdoor gear," and a carry-on style travel bag with me each week. This means two trips to-and-from the car and several bags to manage.
My [[Cotopaxi Alpa 28L (V1)]] works well and spoiled me on the clamshell nature although just before it I was getting used to cube packing with a [[Pelican 1535TRVL]] case.
I'm thinking about defining my EDC in three _modes_:
- Mode One - day-to-day work, recreation, and errands
- Mode Two - specialty activities (meetups, conferences, food truck rallies, visiting out of town friends) where I'll want some more kit but won't be staying
- Mode Three - mountain trips, travel, and unknowns
My system should match three main _themes_:
- Work and Play - have the equipment I need with me to go back and forth to work in mode one or specialty equipment in mode two and three
- Respond - have equipment that's useful to address issues I have on a semi regular basis in mode one and as first aid in mode three
- Travel - the Yurt has everything that I need for day-to-day except for a couple things (my glasses for example) but this will likely also include a couple days worth of clothes on the weekend
Now, all this being said, I don't want this to be seen as a "prepper" situation. I'm not treating this like a [[Bug Out/In Bag]] that I'll be keeping with me 24/7, but I do want it to feel like overkill - and then walk it back. There are a lot of lessons I've learned from [[Erik Obermeyer|Erik]] and his ability to organize kits of equipment that were complete but not overly complicated is something I've long envied. This is just swinging the pendulum into that area while still scratching a little bit of "ultralight" itch.
